Secret Shopping: Airports

With international flights insisting on your arrival at the airport two hours prior to departure time what better way to spend your time than taking advantage of some great shopping.

Airport shopping has really evolved in recent years and gone are the days of the only offerings being tattily packaged perfume and a box of chocolates.

The major UK airports have vast, customer friendly, shopping environments and are quite frankly a Mecca for beauty aficionados. The major beauty brands are there and are often staffed with their own staff, who are trained to the same standard as the consultants at the department stores.

Esteè Lauder, Clinique, Crème de la Mer, Lancome, YSL, La Prairie, SK-II, to name just a few are present and offer not just their main line products but some also carry airport exclusives such as gift sets, exclusive make up palettes or bigger sizes of hero products making it the perfect place to shop and stock up.

Here are some of The Style Edit’s top buys at the airport (pricing is the suggested airport price):

Aside from the range of products being comparable to department stores, what sets airport shopping apart is the level of service available. The airport beauty hall is invariably quieter than it’s High Street counterpart and the consultants are often eager to share their knowledge and have more time for you. I also love that the luxurious experience offered by the prestige brands is still very much at the forefront; Jo Malone for example offer their signature complementary hand and arm massage in their airport boutiques and the big make up giants such as Bobbi Brown and MAC offer their artistry services also.

One thing worth remembering is that the highly sought after limited edition make up collections often go into airports as well as the High Street so that elusive Rhianna for MAC lipstick or hard to nab YSL shade or a swoon worthy Tom Ford collection may just still be in stock.

Fragrance has always dominated airport shopping and the beauty halls at the airport literally heave under the weight of choice. Hermes sits nestled with Chloe who is face to face with Chanel and Dior. The real treat though is the coffrets. Some have a family of fragrances in one gorgeous little box where others are the fragrance with a host of ancillaries such as a body lotion or shower gel.

With Christmas fast approaching airports are possibly one of the best destinations for shopping and the savings made may just cover the cost of a cheeky little trip somewhere as a gift to yourself and get you access to these fabulous beauty halls!

Airport shopping doesn’t start and end with beauty however, the major UK airports have High Street stores such as Kurt Geiger, Riess, Ted Baker and luxury brands such as Tiffany, Smythson and Harrods. I fell in love with an Etro dress at Heathrow T5 three years ago that I’m still kicking myself for not buying.

I can’t recommend airport shopping highly enough. I love it, the atmosphere, the choice and all whilst in a wonderful mood that I am about to jet off somewhere fabulous.
